Thank you for the wonderful, exciting opportunity! My family and I had a great experience being part of Disturbed’s 25 Years of Sickness tour. This was incredibly special for a couple of reasons. I was in the hospital this time last year with a complicated intracranial infection including bacterial meningitis. I struggled with post-meningitis sequelae throughout the rest of the year before undergoing neurosurgery to repair a CSF leak at the end of October. I had terrible light and sound sensitivity for over six months and retreated into solitude and darkness to avoid pain. I moved into my upstairs bedroom at one point where I had two blankets hung over the window to block out light. It was that bad. I experienced suicidal ideation during this time and found inspiration in David Draiman, Disturbed’s frontman, who has talked about his struggles with suicidal ideation at previous concerts and advocated for mental health support. I’ve gotten slowly better since neurosurgery but still have some minor light and sound sensitivity. I mainly struggled with fear of loud sounds. My family has struggled throughout this experience as well. I have mild neurocognitive disorder as a result of the infection along with major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. My oldest son, who I’ve had custody of since 2008, recently decided that he would like to go stay with his mom, a decision that was a consequence of the infection and it’s impact on my family in the aftermath. However, when I saw that tickets were available to a local Disturbed concert through VetTix, I thought, my wife and my oldest son are fans of Disturbed, how great would it be if I could get tickets to their concert as a way to thank them for their support this past year. I was elated when I was selected in the lottery, and they were incredibly excited when they found out. I wasn’t planning to go with them, though, because of my sound sensitivity and anxiety. I suggested them going with a family friend, but no one accepted the invitation to go. So I told my wife, this must mean our youngest son and I are meant to go. Our youngest has autism and ADHD, and he was about equally as apprehensive about the thought of going to a concert as I was. But I’ve been a fan of Disturbed since I was in high school, and I had never been to a concert before. I thought, perhaps this is my next step in overcoming my fears and anxiety. So, I decided to go as well. And it was amazing! I experienced some initial discomfort and had to cycle Loop earplugs in and out to manage my sound sensitivity, but I was smiling like a kid again when Draiman took the stage. This concert was an experience that my family and I needed greatly. Because I’ve been out of work since last year, we wouldn’t have been able to attend this concert without the generosity of VetTix and its donors. I’m currently participating in therapy through the VA to help me get back on my feet again, and this experience was a helpful, unexpected leap. Thank you! I will never forget this experience. I apologize that I don’t have a better photo. I was so focused on capturing video of the concert with my phone, lol.
