When your legs don't work like they used to before… but you still find yourself at the Ed Sheeran: +-=/x Concert and having a blast on a Friday night courtesy of @vettix Singer-songwriter Rosa Linn kicked off the night and Khalid, who was originally supposed to open the show, apparently had an accident and was replaced by John Mayer as a favor per Sheeran’s request. Mayer’s guitar skills during his opening set was impressive as expected. It was later when he came out to perform on “Thinking Out Loud” with Sheeran during his guitar solo was when he really awed the audience. I really wished they would have played one of Mayer’s hits like “Daughters” together. It was Ed Sheeran’s return to @gillettestadium where he first started performing his solo act at NFL stadiums in 2018 and where he now proclaims as his ‘favorite place to play’ in the US. For 2 1/2 hours, Ed performed a career-spanning setlist from a rotating circular stage with the use of a loop pedal for his solo pieces and also with some help from live musicians on the outskirts of the stage for songs with the full band. Surrounded by moving stage pieces, it was a much louder and bolder show filled with infectious beats and pyrotechnics which was definitely not the same as his shows of old. Sheeran opened with “Tides” and later transitioned into a solo set, highlighted by "The A Team" and a hip-hop mashup of “Don’t/No Diggity”. While the sun was beginning to set, the band came out again and Sheeran dedicated “Beautiful People” to Khalid, a collaborator on the hit song. Later in the set, violinist Alicia Enstrom joined Ed for “Galway Girl,” Emily’s favorite Sheeran song. My favorite part of the night was when Mayer joined Sheeran for an extended jam of “Thinking Out Loud,” a song the two have performed together at the Grammys and at Mayer’s shows. Sheeran’s last solo set included a stripped-down version of “Love Yourself,” made famous by Justin Bieber, “Photograph” and “Perfect” the night’s biggest singalong session with the fans. During the encore, the night ended with the high-energy hits of “Shape of You” and “Bad Habits” along with a flurry of fireworks erupting from the stage. Our family had such a blast for the concert at Gillette Stadium. There aren't too many times where the parents and kids can attend a concert venue where everyone truly enjoys the genre of music together. The parents usually go to concerts without the kids or chaperone them to an act that only the kids want to see. Ed Sheeran's concert was one we all enjoyed together. Thanks to the Messina Touring Group, LLC for donating the tickets and to Vet Tix for making them available to our family. It was because of your generosity that we were able to experience such a memorable night of live music.
