Haydn Symphony No. 45 - Saturday

Our thanks to The Phoenix Symphony for donating tickets to the Haydn Farewell Symphony (No. 45). This was a first for us: seeing this symphony performed live. What a hoot, musicians getting up and leaving while the music is still being played by an ever dwindling orchestra. We also got to hear Maestro Tito play the violin! Most enjoyable performance. Mahler's unnumbered symphony, Das Lied von der Erde, started in Grand Wagnerian style and the first movement was very enjoyable. Even the second movement had very interesting violin and bass work coupled with oboe and flute. From that point onward; however, the work becomes more and more tedious and disconnected from the first two movements sounding much like a dirge at the end. While this merely caused me to become drowsy it killed Mahler in spite of his attempt to avoid the 9th-symphony curse. Thanks again to The Phoenix Symphony for their talent and generosity.

My thanks to the kind and generous Phoenix Symphony organization and our compliments for a great Saturday evening performance which drew a well deserved standing ovation. Conductor Tito Munoz provided a very helpful historical perspective on the two featured composers and their works. Hayden's Farewell Symphony was also entertaining as the members of the orchestra made their own individual farewells during the last movement, a very humorous and unusual touch. We also enjoyed the Mahler performance post intermission. Very helpful to have the printed German words and translation to follow the guest artists and their performance. Thank you for bringing wonderful culture to Phoenix (and a nice contrast with the Comicon crowd before and after the performance).
