Subject: A Warm Thank You for a Memorable Sunday at the Ballpark Dear Donald P., Jennifer L., and Irma M., I'm writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for my unforgettable experience at the Oakland Athletics game on Sunday, August 6, 2023. As a disabled veteran and a fervent baseball fan, the opportunity to witness the annual Bay Bridge Series finale against the Giants was more than just a game—it was an emotional journey that brought together the legacy, rivalry, and future promise of my beloved A's. The induction of the five franchise icons, Gene Tenace, Carney Lansford, Jason Giambi, Roy Steele, and Bob Johnson, into the Athletics Hall of Fame was a deeply moving spectacle. These men have contributed significantly to the rich tapestry of the A’s history, and to witness their recognition in person was a profound honor. The 8-6 victory against the Giants, underscored by the unexpected power display from Nick Allen, Zack Gelof's critical hits, and Shea Langeliers' decisive RBI single, made for a thrilling spectacle. It was a testament to the A's resilience and potential, underscoring the bright future. Despite his heartfelt empathy for the Oakland fans, Jason Giambi's support for the potential relocation resonated deeply. Despite the inevitable challenges, his belief that competitiveness is critical to remaining relevant in baseball struck a chord with me. The parallel drawn between the A’s past and present—namely, the cost-cutting measures that led to Bob Johnson's debut in the Philadelphia era and the current prospect of relocation—added a significant layer to the narrative of the day. This game represented more than just a sporting event—it celebrated the A's enduring spirit, a tribute to their rich history, and an optimistic outlook toward a promising future. Regardless of where the franchise finds its home, I believe the A's will continue to exhibit the same tenacity, heart, and competitive spirit they always have. Thank you, Donald, Jennifer, and Irma, for this treasured opportunity to witness such a poignant chapter in the A's history. Your generosity enabled me to participate in a memorable day that I will always recall fondly. I look forward to what the future holds for the franchise and can't wait to watch the continuing journey of the Oakland Athletics. Sincerely, Maury "Mack" McFadden LCDR, USCG (Ret.)
